Shrinkage is the silent margin killer in the flower trade. Where waste really comes from, and the sourcing and handling habits that cut it.

How to Reduce Flower Shrinkage: A Profit Guide for Florists and Retailers

Shrinkage — flowers that are bought but never sold — is the quietest threat to a flower business's profit. A shop can have strong sales and still struggle because too much stock dies in the bucket. The good news: most shrinkage is preventable, and it starts long before the flowers reach your shelf.

Shrinkage starts at sourcing

A flower that arrives with half its vase life already spent is a markdown waiting to happen. The single biggest lever on waste is buying fresh product that has been cut, cooled and moved fast under an unbroken cold chain. Cheap flowers with a broken cold chain are the most expensive flowers you can buy.

Protect the cold chain on your side too

Freshness gained in transit is easily lost in the shop. Keep flowers cool, out of direct sun and away from heat sources and ripening fruit. Every warm hour shortens the window you have to sell.

Condition flowers properly on arrival

A clean cut, clean water, the right food and a cool settling-in period before display can add days of sellable life. Skipping conditioning to save minutes usually costs stems.

Rotate and merchandise with discipline

First in, first out is not just a warehouse rule. Bring older stock forward, build it into bouquets before it fades, and price to move product while it still looks its best rather than discounting it once it is already tired.

Buy an assortment that matches your demand

Over-ordering a slow variety guarantees waste. Match your order to what actually sells, lean on flowers with strong vase life for the backbone of your range, and use a reliable weekly program so you can buy closer to real demand instead of stockpiling.

Vase life is a sourcing decision

Some flowers simply last longer — carnations and many fillers are quietly excellent value because they hold for weeks. Building part of your range around long-lasting flowers lowers your average shrinkage without lowering your quality.
