The Global Flower Holiday Calendar: When Farms Start Preparing for Each Peak

Flowers are one of the few products where the selling date and the planting date can be four months apart. If you buy wholesale, the single most valuable thing you can hold is a calendar that maps each holiday to the moment farms actually start preparing for it.

The peaks that move the market

• Valentine's Day (14 Feb): the largest rose event in the world; farms pinch and time crops from roughly October.
• International Women's Day (8 Mar): enormous in Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia; overlaps the Valentine's recovery.
• Mother's Day: the dates differ by country (see below), but the UK/US/Australia cluster in March–May drives a second rose-and-mixed peak.
• All Saints' / Day of the Dead (1–2 Nov): the chrysanthemum event of Europe and Latin America.
• Lunar New Year (Jan–Feb): a colour-and-symbolism peak across Asian markets.
• Christmas & Advent (Dec): reds, whites and textured greens for retail.

Why lead time is the whole game

A rose sold on 14 February was a decision made in October: which varieties to pinch, how to time the bud, how much volume to commit. By January the grades are largely spoken for. The buyers who get the head sizes and colours they want are the ones who booked while the crop was still a plan — not the ones who came to the open market in the final week.

How to use a calendar like this

Work backwards from each peak your program serves, add the farm's preparation window, and place your commitment before that window closes. For the big rose peaks that means booking in the previous quarter; for chrysanthemum-led events like All Saints', it means confirming volume and colour through late summer.
