Flower Grading Standards Explained: Stem Length, Head Size and Bunch Counts
What the numbers on a flower box actually mean — and how understanding grades helps you buy the right product for the right job at the right price.
When two boxes of the same flower carry very different prices, the answer is almost always in the grade. Grading is the shared language that lets a buyer in Europe trust a crop grown thousands of kilometres away. Here is how to read it.
Stem length
Roses and many other flowers are graded by stem length, usually in centimetres — 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and up. Longer stems come from stronger, more mature plants and command higher prices. Longer is not always better: a compact arrangement or a supermarket bouquet may be built more economically on shorter grades, while a luxury event calls for the long ones.
Head size
For roses, hydrangeas and carnations, head size is as important as length. A larger, well-formed head reads as premium and opens beautifully. Hydrangeas in particular are often sold by head diameter, because that single measurement drives both the look and the price.
Bunch counts and packing
Flowers travel in standardised bunches — commonly 10, 20 or 25 stems — packed into boxes by count. Knowing the counts lets you translate a price per box into a true price per stem, and compare suppliers on equal terms rather than guessing.
Quality tiers beyond the measurements
Beyond size, a grade reflects uniformity, stage of opening, foliage condition and freedom from damage. The best farms grade tightly, so every stem in the bunch behaves the same way in the vase. Loose grading is where nasty surprises hide.
Match the grade to the job
The skill is not always buying the top grade — it is buying the right grade. Premium length and head size for weddings and luxury retail; efficient mid-grades for volume bouquets and everyday programs. Paying for 70cm roses to chop them into a posy is money on the floor.
