Flower Care and Handling: A Guide for Retailers and Florists

The steps between the delivery box and the vase decide how long your flowers last and sell. A practical handling routine that protects freshness and margin.

Flower Care and Handling: A Guide for Retailers and Florists

Great flowers can still disappoint if they are handled badly after they arrive. The routine between the delivery box and the display bucket is where vase life is either protected or thrown away. Here is a handling standard worth building into every delivery day.

Unpack quickly and inspect

Open boxes as soon as they arrive rather than leaving them warm. Check freshness, grade and condition against what you ordered, and get the flowers into your handling routine straight away. Time spent sitting in a warm box is vase life lost.

Give every stem a clean, fresh cut

Cut two to three centimetres off each stem with a clean, sharp tool, ideally at an angle so the stem cannot sit flat on the bucket floor. A fresh cut reopens the channels the flower drinks through, which may have sealed in transit.

Use clean water and flower food

Always use clean buckets and fresh water dosed with the correct flower food. Flower food is not optional — it feeds the bloom, keeps water clear of bacteria and can meaningfully extend vase life. Skipping it to save a moment costs stems later.

Let flowers hydrate before display

Give newly cut stems time to drink deeply in a cool spot before they go on show. This settling period lets them recover from travel and open evenly, which is exactly what customers want to see.

Control temperature and environment

Keep flowers cool, out of direct sun and away from heat, draughts and ripening fruit — the ethylene fruit gives off ages flowers fast. A stable, cool environment is the single biggest thing you control once the flowers are in the shop.

Rotate and refresh

Change water regularly, remove any fading stems before they affect their neighbours, and bring older stock forward so it sells while it still looks its best. A little daily attention keeps the whole display fresh.

Good handling starts with a fresh box

Even the best routine cannot rescue a flower that arrived old. That is why sourcing fresh product under a strong cold chain is the foundation everything else builds on — and it is where Vibra starts.
